CCPO puts dents in criminals’ plans

We urge the public to sign up and support the CCPO

A COPPER thief was caught in possession of stolen cable valued at almost R10,000 by a vigilant Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) committee member.

George Snodey was driving along Arbour Road on Friday morning, 17 June at about 8am when he spotted a man emerge from the bush with a big black bag on his shoulders.

After questioning him and not being satisfied with the various explanations offered, back-up was called and it was established that copper wire had been stolen from a business premises near Tioxide.

“The owner positively identified the stolen property, a case was opened and the thief detained by Toti SAPS,” said Snodey. Later in the day, a man was caught by a CCPO foot patrol in Arthur Howes Road in possession of a high pressure cleaner at about 4pm. After questioning him, he took CCPO members back to a house in Somerset Place where he had stolen it from. The owner identified the stolen property and the thief was charged and detained at Toti SAPS.

Two housebreakers were caught after they broke into Ovolli flats in Warner Beach on Thursday, 16 June. A flatscreen TV was stolen and the two thieves, a man and a woman, tried to make their escape on the beach. Senior supervisor Rupert Smit and his crew caught the man at Baggies.”After questioning him, the thief took them to some bushes near the station where he had hidden the TV,” said Snodey.

“The stolen property along with the thief were soon joined by the woman who had fled in the same direction after she was arrested by Blue Security and CCPO reaction officer Mbuyiselo Mdunjane not far from the Warners station in the bush.

She pointed out the stolen items that were also hidden away in the bush.”

Both were handed over to Toti SAPS.

On Friday morning, 10 June just after 8am, a woman who works at Toti Fire Department was robbed of her cellphone near Galleria. “A passing CCPO vehicle was stopped and after receiving a description of the two men, reaction officer Michael Mkhize started a search for them,” said Snodey.

“A short while later the two men were spotted walking north along the railway line.”

In a combined effort with the CCPO, Blue Security, Metro Police dog handler Shawn Jooste, ET Rapid Response and Toti SAPS, they were caught on the railway line near Umbogintwini station by CCPO guards and the cellphone recovered.

“They were taken back to the mall where they were positively identified by the complainant and the men were arrested and charged by Toti SAPS.

We urge the public to sign up and support the CCPO initiative. We make some significant arrests apart from being a deterrent to would-be criminals who are often harassed by our members when they are seen in the area.”
