Rail passage back on track by weekend – PRASA

Repairs at Amanzimtoti station are almost done.

Amanzimtoti train commuters will be back on the tracks by the end of the week.

That is the promise from the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), after Transnet expedited repairs to the damaged railway lines along Bernadotte Street and Amanzimtoti station.

Trains were spotted travelling north and south of Toti station from Saturday, 24 September to test the lines but full service is expected to be reinstated by Friday.

That is according to PRASA spokesman, Zama Nomnganga when the Sun visited the Bernadotte Street construction site on Wednesday, 21 September.

“Repairs at Amanzimtoti station are almost done. By end of the week, work on the station will be done and cleaned,” said Nomnganga.

“Repairs to the railway line that runs alongside Bernadotte Street should be complete by the beginning of October.”

The combined project, once completed, comes at the costly price tag of R12-million.

The railways at Amanzimtoti station and along Bernadotte Street were badly damaged after the late July floods.

“The were no major problems encountered during the repairs besides the rains that delayed the project by a week, as our guys could not work in the rain.

By the end of the month we will be running the normal train service to the South Coast.”
