ATM bombed in Uitsig Road

The men used explosives to bomb the drop safe.

A case of business robbery is being investigated by Amanzimtoti SAPS after thieves bombed a safe at Engen Garage in Uitsig Road on the R603 on Tuesday night, 29 November.

Amanzimtoti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy said a security guard on duty noticed a man crossing the road walking in his direction carrying a rifle which appeared to be an AK47 at about 11.55pm.

“Two more men approached, wearing balaclavas and gloves,” said Capt Van Der Spuy.

“The guard immediately went into hiding and pressed the panic button.

A short while later, he heard a loud noise that sounded like something exploding.”

The men used explosives to bomb the drop safe. They took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in a grey Corsa utility bakkie which was waiting for them.

The security guard only emerged from his hiding spot when the security company and police arrived on the scene.

No shots were fired and no-one was injured.
