Cop killer sentenced to 18 years

MEC lauds courts, police for exemplary work which led to conviction

THE KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, salutes the court for handing down an 18 year sentence of imprisonment for the murder of Constable Dennis Ngcobo.

Mthobisi Ndlovu (31) was sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment for the murder of the policeman.

Ndlovu was further sentenced to five years for defeating the ends of justice and another five years for accessory after the fact. The sentences will run concurrently.

Ngcobo, who was stationed at Durban Central police station, was fatally shot by Ndlovu and taken to the Umkomaas area, where he and his co-accused Qobolwakhe Mqadi (37) and Sizwe Ndlovu (29) buried the body in a shallow grave. Ngcobo was reported missing and a search was conducted. His body was later found and a case of murder was opened at Umkomaas police station. The docket was transferred to the Hawks members in the Durban Organised Crime unit. After a thorough investigation, the three were arrested in August 2014.

Sizwe Ndlovu was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for his role in the matter and on Friday, 9 December, Mthobisi Ndlovu was sentenced. Mqadi, who turned state witness, will be recharged in the same matter.

MEC Kaunda commended  the police and the court for the work well done.

“We hope this judgment will send a clear message to criminals that the long arm of law will always catch up with the killers of our police. We believe this court decision will also bring closure to the family, colleagues and friends of the late Const Ngcobo. We urge the community to work closely with the police by sharing information and to be witnesses so that we can succeed in all the cases of police killings,” said Kaunda.
