Summer rains are well and truly upon us as the last few days have brought constant and steady rainfall to the area.

Amanzimtoti recorded a total of 72mm rainfall over a four day period, with the most precipitation falling on Monday, 20 February when a mammoth 32,6mm was recorded.

These numbers are quite staggering as Amanzimtoti on average sees 98mm of rain in February. With more rain expected in coming days we’re likely to surpass that average. Dam levels have improved significantly and the Umgeni systems latest update on 21 February recorded positive readings, as dams which consistently remained below 50% throughout last year have risen. Nungwane and Umzinto dams are at 86.94 and 100.81% respectively. Thankfully there have been no severe weather warnings for the area, or any recurrence of the devastation caused by last year’s torrential July rains.

The Kwa-Zulu Natal Sharks Board has reinstalled the shark nets which were lifted a week prior in anticipation of the heavy rains associated with ex-Dineo, the tropical storm system that swept across Mozambique.
