UMKOMAAS Golf Club proudly hosted its annual fundraising day last Saturday, with tremendous success.
There were 80 players in the field, many thanks to all the visitors who played and to the wonderful members who are always so supportive of all club events.
It goes without saying that, without sponsors, there would not be a competition at all. Grateful thanks to all who donated, sponsored or pledged prizes to this important day. Thanks go to Patricia Thompson and Vlasta Opie for manning the ‘shooter table’ on the 13th, they did a sterling job. It must have been pretty raucous around that area of the golf course.
The ‘cherry on the top’ was the superb weather – it could not have been better suited for a perfect day of golf. Raffle winners were Jacques Kirstein, half a lamb; Natalie Singer and Dawn Crookes, pork auction and Peter Williamson, the savoury snack hamper.
Winners of the fundraising day were Christopher Pillay and Saga Reddy, on a count out from Jimmy Spear and Wally Kent in second place, both teams on 46 points.
In third place, on their own were J Dlamini and P Ndlovo on 45 points, with youngsters, Keegan Redfern and Hayden Haggie taking home the fourth place prize, counting out a slew of players (six in all) all on 43 points. Prizes were paid out to 16th place, so a great day was had by all. Nearest the pins were Stuey Nalson – fourth; Mike Harvard – ninth; Sabiha Bacaus – 13th and Jacques Kirstein 17th. Three two-clubs were also won, Sabiha Bacaus had two, on the 13th and 17th holes and Jacques Kirstein on the 17th hole. Many congratulations to all the winners on Saturday.
UGC’s Allerton boys played their 36 hole match on Sunday, 30 April against Central Durban and after halving the singles session in the morning, they went on to defeat their opponents 7/2. Well done to the boys who had a bit of a dodgy start to 2017 (they were promoted last year from the B division) but are now definitely holding their own with the big boys in A division. Well done, guys – your next match will be against Mt Edgecombe on Sunday, 21 May at Umkomaas.
Also in the news this week are the ‘littlies’ who played at Amanzimtoti Golf Club last Sunday in the SA Kids Golf tournament. They all did very well with Damien O’Connell placed third in the 11 to 12-year-old group with twins Rory and Jordan Bernadis tying for fourth spot in the seven to eight-year-old group, with Noah Rudwick taking the fifth place in this group. Well done, boys – you made all at UGC very proud and confident that you will go from strength to strength in your golf.
Back to last Wednesday’s usual individual stableford competition, where club captain Barrie Taylor welcomed visitors Peter Bond and Jan Moran. It was won by Strand Striker Trevor Osborne on 41 points, followed by Chris Viljoen in second place on 38 points and Strand Striker, Fred Brandow in third spot on 36. Nelson Moonsamy took fourth place, counting out Peter Williamson, Barrie Taylor and Jimmy Pickavance, all on 35 points.
The Frog Racing last Friday, 28 April was a huge success. It offered something very different for those at the club, however it’s just a pity these evenings are not better supported. Many thanks to John Thompson for organising the frog races, the likes of which have never been seen before in Umkomaas. It was great fun though.

This Saturday, 6 May the Toyota Malanda monthly medal mug competition takes place with matchplay being played earlier in the morning at around 7am. Check the notice board for times and details. Sunday, 7 May is open for social golf. If carts are required, call ahead and book. Also happening on Sunday is Nelson’s Sunday Bash which starts at around 11am under the lapa on the first tee. Anyone may join this group of guys for a challenging day of golf, testing your skills against the locals. Nelson can be contacted on 082-428-9000.
Congratulations to Natalie Singer, who took on the might of the women’s golfing fraternity in the SA Championships played at Wanderers Golf Club in Johannesburg from Sunday to Tuesday, 23 to 25 April. She finished seventh overall – a pretty remarkable result, considering that as a competitive, strong and accurate hitter of the ball, Natalie was being out-driven by these young girls by 100 metres. Hats off to her for putting herself out there and still finishing in seventh place.
Green fee rates on various days can be found on UGC’s website at www.umkomaasgolf.co.za
