CCPO battles to cope with spate of crimes

The SUN sent queries to Amanzimtoti SAPS but no response was forthcoming.

Amanzimtoti is drowning under a recent massive wave of crime and the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) is battling to cope with limited resources.

Frustrated at failing to gain entry to the Honda dealership in Arbour Road, thieves decided to be malicious and use a 14-pound hammer to smash a big expensive window for fun as they were leaving.

“In a 24-hour period crime in our area has been really hectic, and I hope the message will strike home for those who are still not CCPO members,” said committee member, George Snodey.

Since Thursday night, 22 February, Snodey said garden furniture was stolen from Roysten Ridge in Roysten Road, a housebreaking took place in Hunt Road, Winklespruit, and theft of motor vehicle from Tamrin Place in Gus Brown Road. A pub in Rosslyn Road and plumbers in the same building had business burglaries.

A housebreaking took place at a residence in Kingsway, Amanzimtot; a business burglary at a pub in Leslie Way; an attempted business burglary at the car dealership; attempted housebreakings in Fynn Road and Saltwood Drive; housebreakings in Karridale Drive, Valley View Road and Turner Street; a robbery from a delivery vehicle at Seadoone Mall; an attempted housebreaking at Tunbridge Wells in Adams Road; and at least two cars had wheels stolen off them.

A woman was assaulted by two men during a robbery outside Kuswag Skool.

“We are trying our utmost to stem the tide but with only about 10% of residents supporting the CCPO, we are always fighting a losing battle,” said Snodey.

The SUN sent queries to Amanzimtoti station commander, Col Bonginkosi Nkabinde and Amanzimtoti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy regarding the recent crime wave but no response was forthcoming.
