A thief was arrested by the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) in Warner Beach after receiving a tip-off on Friday, 30 November.
CCPO committee member, George Snodey received a call from concerned business people regarding a suspicious Toyota Corolla parked across from their premises. After observing the situation for about 45 minutes, he called for back-up from the CCPO, ET Rapid Response and Blue Security.
“One suspect eventually alighted from the vehicle and approached a white Renault Duster that was parked opposite Sparkport Chemist. He walked straight up to the front passenger door, opened it and began scratching around for anything he could find. He then opened the back door, where he once again started scratching around,” said Snodey.
Using the CCPO radio network, Snodey summoned the rest of the crew to close in and the man was apprehended while still rifling through the remote-jammed vehicle. “Two other suspects fled the scene in a getaway vehicle, with the CCPO, ET and Blue Security joined by someone from the tracking company and Toti SAPS in pursuit.

“The suspects went towards Winklespruit and got onto the N2 northbound, where the chase eventually ended with the suspects escaping deep into Umlazi, after what was described as some really reckless driving. PT Alarms joined in the chase in Umlazi but the suspects managed to pull off a Houdini,” said Snodey.

The apprehended thief was arrested and taken to Toti SAPS, where he was charged and detained. “Once again local people benefitted from being a CCPO member. If you are not a member, sign up now. With the holidays around the corner and the SAPS due to be stretched to the limit protecting beaches and car parks, which will be overcrowded, you are going to need help and if they can’t help you immediately, who is going to help you?”
