New editor for the Sun

THERE’s a new face in the managing editor’s chair at the South Coast Sun from this week.

Outgoing managing editor Michellé Izatt is vacating her role of the last 15 years to Roelien Vorster, who joins the branch from Gauteng.

Roelien was formerly managing editor of the Roodepoort Record and Roodepoort Northsider products, and she has been with the Caxton group in various positions at several papers for close to 19 years.

Michelle is not lost to the world of local media, as she is taking up the position of business manager at the South Coast Herald, the Sun’s sister branch in Port Shepstone.

She was sentimental about moving on after spending more than two decades at the Sun in total. “I recall coming to the Sun as a fledgling reporter, learning the ropes on the Southlands Sun. It’s been a whirlwind trip leading the paper through the last 15 years, overseeing the advent of the multimedia age and transitioning into the digital space,” said Michellé. “I will miss the many people I interacted with and look back with fondness on all the events, causes, highs and lows my newsroom and I chronicled. From the successful opposition to the proposed N2 toll road, the unsuccessful push-back to the renaming of Kingsway to Andrew Zondo Road and the advent of the CCPO, there have been countless community causes we have highlighted. The Sun staff hold a special place in my heart, and Amanzimtoti is lucky to have this fervent servant of community causes at its fingertips. Community issues are the lifeblood of the Sun and it has been my privilege to be part of this. I am confident the Sun will continue shining under Roelien’s close gaze.”

Roelien is looking forward to interacting with the community and produce a weekly newspaper that is of high quality with the main focus on the various issues that may arise. “The paper is for the community, about the community and in the community and that is going to be my main focus.” she said. “It is a beautiful area and I look forward to the new adventure.” Email Roelien at roelienv@caxton.co.za
