After networking with its partner institution, Interlaken Gymnasium in Switzerland, nine learners were invited to visit South Africa. The Swiss learners were afforded the opportunity to explore the diverse cultures that are seen throughout South Africa when they were recently part of a cultural exchange programme with Sterlitzia Secondary School.
The cultural exchange programme has taken the school’s education to an international level. The nine delighted learners from Switzerland were given the opportunity to engage in classroom activities and participate in sport such as soccer and netball. They were also able to explore various tourist attractions in and around Durban. These attractions included, the uShaka Marine World, Phezulu Safari Park, Hluhluwe Game Reserve, the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, Inanda Heritage Trail and several others during their two week stay aboard.

Co-ordinator of the programme and teacher of Tourism at Sterlitzia Secondary, Maya Shah said, “This has been an ongoing programme for the past six years. It gives people from South Africa and Switzerland an amazing opportunity to able to travel while learning important life skills to broaden their social horizons.”
During their stay, the Swiss learners stayed with their host families and were delighted to immerse themselves in the customs of other cultures.

The principal of Sterlitzia Secondary, Mukesh Harichan said, “We hope to achieve a positive change by providing our learners with opportunities to experience our cultural diversity in a safe and supportive environment. It brings two countries together to promote global respect and peace.” The nine learners from Sterlitzia Secondary will be jetting off to Switzerland on 20 March 2020.
