Twini scouts make a difference in wheelchair initiative

Bread tags for wheelchair initiative

Umbogintwini Scouts Group are the latest to join the bread tags for wheelchair initiative and have already collected a healthy 97kg of bottle tops.

Sue Martin, representing Quadriplegic Association of South Africa (QASA), went along last Friday night to explain how this programme ticks so many boxes, especially when there is so much emphasis placed on spreading awareness about the state of the world’s beaches due to littering and the damage plastic is causing on a global level.

The project teaches not only children, but also the community an important lesson about looking after their environment and how good recycling, not just plastic, is. They learn that instead of bread tags and bottle tops ending up on rubbish dumps, the following are made – seedling trays, picture frames, coat hangers, cornices and skirtings, outdoor furniture, poles and decking.

It also teaches them, that as a person, you can make a difference, but collectively as a team it’s more effective and faster. The pleasure of giving is so rewarding and by simply collecting bread tags and beverage tops, a wheelchair can be given to a person in need. Not only is that one person forever grateful as they now have independence and mobility, but the family and friends who support that person, are extremely appreciative. It honestly changes lives.
