Five things you may not believe happened 25 years ago in Amanzimtoti.
Closure of casinos will cause hardship
1. Casino owners this week were advised to cease trading by no later than midnight on 15 November, if they are operating illegally.
Two casinos operate in Toti, and the SUN was unable to contact either at the time of going to press. In a joint statement issued by the Regional Commissioner, Natal SAP, General Colin Steyn, and Attorney-General Natal, Adv Tim McNally, they said the provisions of the Gambling Act, 1965, should be applied.
Fireworks display was no big bang
2. The firework display at Umbogintwini on Guy Fawks night was a damp squib.
So say several parents who stood in the rain for over an hour to see a five minute display fizzle out. “It was a rip off,” said a Doonheights mother. “How they can substantiate charging R5 per adult and R3 per child for a pathetic five minute firework display is beyond comprehension,” she said.
Fishermen complain of mess at Pipeline
3. Anglers in the area are complaining about the mess at Pipeline beach.
A fishermen who contacted the SUN this week said there is an element that abuses the beach. He claims that litter is left everywhere and the dune vegetation is being destroyed by fishermen who do not care about the environment. He also claims that some fishermen, from out the area, are ‘poaching’ shad for commercial gain.
Armed robber shot
4. A man was shot and injured after he tried to rob a security guard of his shotgun at Irene Supermarket on Tuesday last week.
At about 11am the guard, D Mhlongo, was approached by a man armed with a homemade gun, who tried to take Mhlongo’s shotgun. During the ensuing struggle, the robber fired a shot and fled into the bushes. Another man arrived, and fired shots after the man allegedly pointed the gun at him.
Post boxes removed
5. Residents are up in arms as a result of the Post Office’s ‘rationalisation’ plan.
Toti residents have been complaining specifically about the loss of the post box at the corner of Adams and Nelson roads. Post office policy stands as follows: If the post box has less than 50 letters a week, it is not viable and is therefore removed. In some cases the post boxes have been near old age homes and pensioners have been forced to walk or find transport to the next nearest box.
