Lifeguards rescue drowning mother in Amanzimtoti

The public is reminded to swim only at demarcated and patrolled beaches.

Lifeguards were out at sea once again to rescue a drowning mother at Amanzimtoti Main Beach on Thursday, 12 November.

“Kudos to our eThekwini lifeguards who once again confirmed that we simply cannot go without them. Just after 4pm a visiting mother of two waded into the surf while her husband and children played in the shallows. She was caught in the grip of strong undercurrent and she was suddenly ripped into deeper water, fortunately lifeguards noticed and responded, resulting in a successful rescue and reunited (albeit traumatised) family,” said ward 97 councillor, André Beetge.

The sea is treacherous, never turn your back on it.  He commended beach manager, Jace Govender and the crew of lifeguards for their dedication towards safety.

“The innocent waves and surf could well obscure the most dangerous of currents. Had this incident happened at any unpatrolled non-bathing beach, the story would most certainly not have had the same happy ending. Never underestimate the might and deception of the ocean. The public is reminded to swim only at demarcated and patrolled beaches.”
