Consequences of poor planning [LETTER]

Blame needs to be placed squarely at the feet of the company.

EDITOR – I wish to raise some concerns regarding the manner in which fibre is being brought to the Amanzimtoti area.

Before work started, I would have expected some advance notice from either eThekwini, who would have had to permit the digging up of pavements and, or, from the company responsible for installing fibre.

Daily I have heard of and had first-hand experience of water outages due to the diggers damaging water pipes. In some cases, water was seen by residents to be running down roads for up to six hours and repairs have often had to be made in the dark – long after the diggers had left for home. This is wastage of a scarce resource and surely Mitsol’s project managers should have done better planning to ascertain where water pipes are?

As to providing their workers with the tools and utilities required, nowhere have I seen temporary ablutions for their workers for their basic needs. Imagine the indignity afforded to these workers by a Toti house owner telling them not to “xxx” on their grass. How embarrassing it must be for these workers not to have proper ablutions and to be yelled at because of it too.

As much as we yearn for the newest technology, it seems some organisations don’t consider how to go about acquiring it in a manner that does not impact on the environment of humans. Blame needs to be placed squarely at the feet of the company and eThekwini who need to take a step back, correct their methods and planning and then proceed in the proper way.
