Khanya Hospice aims for in-patient unit

Anyone wanting to donate or assist, call Neil on 083-597-8985 or email hospice@khanyahospice.co.za.

As a fundraiser for Khanya Hospice, Scottfin donated R100 for every policy it sold during a specific period in ‘Movember’, to encourage men to be tested for prostate and testicular cancer.

“The focus is always on women and breast cancer, but the men also need to be made aware that early detection and prevention is very important. Covid-19 had an impact on our finances, but with the support of wonderful people in the area that we serve, we will survive,” said the CEO of Khanya Hospice, Neil McDonald.

He recently was interviewed on Radio Al Ansaar on health issues for men. People who listened to the programme phoned in after the interview and donated goods that were packed in their cupboards and had never been used. “We have three Hospice shops where we sell any donated articles and that help sustains the free palliative nursing care we offer to people with life-threatening diseases and support to their families.”

The public is always welcome to pop in. Steve Pillay of Doonside had heard and seen so much about Khanya Hospice in the local newspaper that he decided to go and meet the staff members, see what they are doing and get to know more about the organisation. “He was pleasantly surprised to see the work that is happening behind the scenes and what we offer.

“We cover a huge area from Isipingo to Hibberdene and inland, and the ideal situation for us would be an in-patient unit. We are trying our best to make this a reality, but the process is very slow. We desperately need an in-patient unit, where we can admit patients and care for them 24/7. We know and understand the trauma, difficulty and stress involved in trying to care for a patient at home – it is not easy. There is a building available, turn key and walk in, but we need a donor or a few to donate R16-million. The building is in our area and while we hear on the news about billions and trillions being wasted, R16-million is not much.”

Anyone wanting to donate or assist, call Neil on 083-597-8985 or email hospice@khanyahospice.co.za. “If there are any willing hands to help in our three shops, also contact us.”

Herman Cloete is the winner of the Khanya Hospice Amanzimtoti shop lucky draw. The hamper, packed with nice goodies, is presented to him by manager Sarie Pretorius, who wishes all supporters a wonderful holiday and festive season, and blessings for 2021.
