Service delivery concerns remain in Amanzimtoti

Cllr André Beetge discusses issues around streetlights and increased complaints.

Despite Councillor André Beetge’s efforts across various platforms to answer questions and keep the public updated on current events, the same questions appear to be repeated.

Streetlights

Faulty streetlights remain a constant concern, not only in the greater Amanzimtoti area, but indeed across the entire city with an estimated 30% of street lights not currently working.

“While there is certainly a level of mismanagement coupled to budgetary constraints to blame, there is also the reality of cabling and infrastructure theft which the department is unable to catch up to This being a direct result of the socio economic climate in the country brought about by daily increases in unemployment, poverty and the continued effect of Covid-19. The department currently has neither the financial nor human resources to address the (ever increasing) backlog overnight.”

“While some ‘emergency blitze’ under ‘Operation Good Hope’ is being implemented in certain areas and against the backdrop of fast approaching local government elections, reality remains that officials should be doing what there were employed for every day and in line with resident elections. We will continue hounding this department to rectify the situation in the interest of our community’s safety.”

Increased complaints The recent Heritage long weekend saw an increase of complaints relating to excessive noise, lockdown violations, public alcohol consumption and irresponsible driving behaviour. “Although there is certainly merit in many of the cases, it would also appear that the recent unrest has effected tolerance levels to the point of many preferring dead silence in their quest to detect every foreign sound.

“While reporting legitimate infringements to the relevant authorities are indeed encouraged, so does the over reporting lead to congestion thus depriving those who are in team need of assistance, from available resources. We have however taken to task facilitating coordination between SAPS, Metro police and Department of Justice in an effort to act against perpetrators in an effort to secure convictions in court against those who just don’t seem to accept that everyone has equal rights.”
