The theme of the event was ‘Reengineering/building, strengthening and maintaining safe and healthy relationships’. ATU is an NPO that deals with a wide range of psychosocial issues including domestic violence and gender-based violence. ATU’s social worker, Orienda Pepu, said the couple’s workshop was planned to equip, build, strengthen and maintain safe and healthy marriages or intimate partnerships in communities.

“ATU considers this initiative a proactive positive reinforcement in preventing intimate partner violence or gender-based violence and preserving safe and healthy partnerships, households, and a violence-free community. ATU believes that maintaining safety is equally important to intervention during unsafe or traumatic incidents,” said Orienda.

Guest speakers at the event were Ndabe Myeza, who is a renowned human behaviour practitioner and a cultural historian, and Mpho Motsie, who is a relationship, intimacy and sex coach, and Glynis McGee from Secret Corner. One couple, Xolani and Zethu Biyase, said they learned a lot of things that they will use to strengthen their marriage.

“We learned about the importance of keeping the lines of communication in our relationship open because it provides an honest base to start from. A lot of problems can be eliminated if couples take time to talk things through instead of assuming that their partner knows what the problem is. I’m glad we came,” said Xolani.

Orienda thanked Gender Links, Woman’s Voice and Leadership SA, Canada for their support and for making the evening possible. She added that ATU is planning to host similar events at least once a year.
