SAPS conduct operation in KwaMakhutha

The operation started at 16:00 and ended at midnight.

THE rising number of crime incidents induced by alcohol abuse in KwaMakhutha prompted SAPS, security companies, and Metro Police to conduct an operation on Saturday, February, 19, to close all illegal shebeens in the area.

eThekwini district SAPS communications officer, Captain Carmen Rhynes, said Operation Senza Kwenzeke started at 16:00 and ended at 00:00.

“It is important to note that often serious crimes such as murder, assault to do grievously bodily harm, malicious damage to property, rape, sexual assault, domestic violence and gender based violence are often influenced by the abuse of alcohol. During the operation, eight illegal shebeens were closed and their owners arrested, as well as their liquor confiscated. Attempted murder and assault with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm arrests were also made,” said Rhynes.

A total of 146 people and 76 vehicles were searched throughout the operation resulting in the issuing of 11 traffic fines and 17 Metro Police fines. Rhynes said during the time of the operation and throughout the weekend, no serious crime was reported in KwaMakhutha.

“That indicates the success of the operation and its positive influence to prevent serious crime from occurring,” she said.

Acting eThekwini District Commissioner, Brigadier Vela Cele said cracking down on crimes such as illegal liquor sales helps prevent the more serious crimes from taking place.

“We are committed to having many operations targeting illegal shebeens on a regular basis, to ensure that it has a positive impact on our communities and crime,” said Cele.
