What’s happening in the ‘Hood’ this festive season

The Robin Hood Foundation is bringing back festive initiatives that you can get involved in to help share the Christmas spirit!

WITH the festive season around the corner, The Robin Hood Foundation is bringing back their yearly initiatives that grant the recipients with extraordinary gifts to bring the Christmas spirit to those who may not have much to celebrate in December.

Ethembeni School for the disabled Celebration of Life Party

The Robin Hood Foundation has been bringing the Celebration of Life Party to the Ethembeni School for the disabled for the past nine years. The purpose of the party is to inspire the children to celebrate their lives and their uniqueness – to let them play, feel the love from our volunteers and donors and just be children, despite their daily challenges.

Each year, The Robin Hood Foundation takes the ‘carnival’ to the learners at the school to celebrate their lives, with a huge ‘birthday party’ for all of them, rolled into a fun-filled afternoon of love and laughter. At the same time, the organisation asks the school to provide them with a wish list of any items the children need that aren’t covered by any social grants or budgets, and they try to fulfil these wishes.

This year, The Robin Hood Foundation’s goal is to provide 270 new single-bed mattresses for the children as theirs have perished over the years. The organisation’s Spring Celebration fundraiser on September 1 helped tremendously in working towards this goal.

The Robin Hood Foundation is appealing to sponsors to assist in blessing these children with the following items on their wish lists:

• Disposable nappies – adult S/M/L
• Waterproof mattress covers
• Toilet paper
• Toothbrushes
• Toothpaste
• Sunscreen
• Vaseline
• Nail clippers
• Facecloths
• Combs
• Male urinary bottles
• Soap
• Roll-on deodorant
• Toys
• Edible treats
• Sun hats

The party starts at 10:00 at Ethembeni, Old Main Road, Inchanga, Outer West Durban and will finish at 13:00.

‘Bless a Granny and Grandpa’ festive season parties

After a two-year suspension, The Robin Hood Foundation are excited to bring back their Bless a Granny and Grandpa campaign.
The organisation started with special Bless a Granny and Grandpa drop-off events in October. The elderly recipients receive some treats to eat, music, presents and company.
Founder and chairperson of the Robin Hood Foundation, Cindy Norcott, says that since the start of this project in 2010, known then as Adopt-a-Granny, the Bless a Granny and Grandpa Project has seen the organisation hand out more than 20 000 gifts to grannies and grandpas in old age homes around the Durban area. “With the amazing support of the community, this has come to be a project that the elderly folk most look forward to!” said Norcott.

Most of these grannies or grandpas may have food and a bed to sleep in, but many have families that live far away or simply do not visit anymore, which is why the Robin Hood Foundation aims to provide gifts to show that they feel important, loved and cared for. If you would like to Bless a Granny or Grandpa this Christmas, there are two options: You can either email The Robin Hood Foundation, and you will be given an elderly person’s name, and in order to process all the requests, your email will be answered within a few days of request. Or you can do a generic gift for a male or female recipient with toiletries, sweets, biscuits, etc.

If you would rather make a donation as a gift, you can deposit R250 into the Robin Hood Foundation’s account. The donation will be used for the organisation to purchase a gift for a granny or grandpa on your behalf. You must include your name and Bless A Granny as a reference.

If you would like to request a Granny or Grandpa’s details, email The Robin Hood Foundation at admin@robinhoodfoundation.co.za.
