Technicians work to restore water supply to Athlone Park

It is anticipated that residents in the high areas of Athlone Park should have their water supply restored by late this afternoon (February 8).

FOLLOWING vandalism and theft at the Athlone Park reservoir on Tuesday (February 6) evening into Wednesday morning, technicians from the mechanical and electrical department have been working on installing a temporary system to reinstate power to the tower pumps.

Ward 97 councillor André Beetge said that given the progress, technicians are optimistic that the temporary process will be up and running come late afternoon today (February 8). “This should enable the pumps to function and restore water supply to the high areas of Athlone Park,” he said.

The vandalism and theft took place on the same day that the non-return valve on the tower was replaced and attention was given to the supply pump from Prospecton.

Beetge said, “We were optimistic that the water challenges to Athlone Park were successfully addressed, however, more reports reached us of non-supply on Wednesday morning. An investigation was conducted that revealed the entire pump station was vandalised and stripped of equipment during the night, rendering it totally dysfunctional,” he said.

Beetge added that this supply challenge to Athlone Park North does not have direct implications for water supply to other areas of the larger Amanzimtoti area.
