Illegal dumpsites in Amanzimtoti to be cleared
On Santo Alberto Avenue household rubbish lines the road and on Longacres Drive garden refuse has been discarded on a grassy area.
CONCERNS from residents regarding illegal dumping in public spaces in Wards 93 and 97 have led to the eThekwini Municipality assuring that measures will be taken to educate the public while investigating the source of the waste.

This was confirmed by Ward 97 councillor André Beetge after concerns were raised regarding illegal dumping on a massive scale along Santo Alberto Avenue in Kingsburgh West, as well as on Longacres Drive near Shulton Park. Beetge said he has been in contact with the relevant eThekwini Municipality Department of Solid Waste (DSW) structures.
On Santo Alberto Avenue, an ever-growing mountain of household rubbish lines the road. Down the road on Longacres Drive, garden refuse continues to be discarded on a grassy area just before the bridge.
Beetge said the concerns raised by residents are legitimate.
“While the scheduled clearing of the site is welcomed, regular clearing alone will not solve the problem. We need to address the cause of the illegal dumping and ensure that residents have access to reliable refuse collection and proper disposal facilities,” said Beetge.
DSW confirmed that its education section is working on an ‘Adopt-a-Spot’ initiative for the area, which could assist in creating greater community involvement and responsibility in keeping it clean.
Beetge said he will continue to engage with DSW on behalf of residents and will monitor the situation to ensure that the promised clearing takes place and that longer-term measures are implemented to prevent the site from simply becoming an illegal dumping hotspot again.
