Stolen car recovered in minutes

The Toyota Etios is a popular car in the e-hailing taxi industry because of its low fuel usage and maintenance costs.

RECENTLY, two Toyota Etios cars were stolen at local shopping centres on two consecutive days, with one recovered soon after while the other has still not been found.

The Etios is a popular car in the e-hailing taxi industry for its frugal fuel consumption and its low overall maintenance costs.

On May 1, a gold Etios was stolen at DSM Mall in Winklespruit in the evening. It has not been recovered yet.

The following morning, another Etios was stolen at Seadoone Mall. According to a statement released by the Community Crime Prevention Organisation Amanzimtoti (CCPO), the car was recovered within 30 minutes by the Amanzimtoti SAPD Crime Prevention Unit in KwaMakhutha, with the assistance of ET Rapid Response, KwaMakhutha SAPS, metro police and the CCPO.

“The suspect fled on SAPS arrival,” said the CCPO in a statement.

According to the most recent SAPS crime report, hijackings in the country have increased by 30% since 2019. At 31.6%, Toyota remains the most stolen brand in the country, with VW second at 14.1% and Ford at 10.4%.
