Strong winds wreak havoc in Amanzimtoti

It is believed that a tornado caused some damage in Panorama Park, and several reports have shown tornadoes in other parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

THERE have been numerous reports of power outages, fallen trees and branches and damage to property in Amanzimtoti and surrounds following yesterday’s (June 3) destructive winds and rainfall.

According to the Ward 97 councillor, André Beetge, what can only be described as a tornado hit the southern part of Ward 97, causing havoc in Panorama Park.

“Thereafter, it appeared to have gone across areas of Warner Beach and central Amanzimtoti before disappearing into other areas/wards. We similarly received reports of the same situations across the larger metro, north, towards Verulam and Tongaat,” he said.

Various power outages have, and are, being experienced in the aftermath.

“Although this has been reported, we would request that patience be exercised as the electricity and disaster management call centres are overwhelmed by calls with only so many technicians available to attend – further given the constraints created by inclement weather conditions,” said Beetge.

He added that neighbourhood watch structures are in the process of further assessing or assisting with tree branches or trees across/into road surfaces that may result in dangerous conditions.
