City on standby following Level 4 weather warning

DEADLY thunderstorms are expected as the city warns residents of a Level 2 progressing into a Level 4 weather warning from tomorrow, November 10.
Ethekwini Municipality’s disaster management and emergency teams are on high alert following a Level 2 progressing into a Level 4 weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). Weather pattens will intensify from Level 2 to Level 4 tomorrow, November 10, between 15:00 and 23:00.

The Yellow Level 4 warning was issued today and is likely to affect several eThekwini areas, including the Central Business District (CBD), Berea, Glenmore, Morningside, Umbilo, Chatsworth, Pinetown, Queensburgh, Amanzimtoti, and uMlazi.
The Level 4 warning, which entails a powerful and destructive storm, is rapidly approaching KwaZulu-Natal, posing a significant threat to life and property. This warning indicates a high risk of severe weather conditions, including torrential rains, damaging winds, and intense lightning.
Deadly thunderstorm expected
Widespread showers and thundershowers will ravage the province, with severe storms forecasted to bring:
• Sustained winds of up to 100 km/h, gusting to 120 km/h
• Excessive lightning, potentially leading to power outages and fires.
• Large hail, causing damage to crops, vehicles, and infrastructure
• Heavy downpours exceeding 40mm, resulting in flash flooding.
Catastrophic impacts expected
The SAWS warns of:
• Flooding of roads, settlements, and low-lying areas, potentially displacing thousands of people
• Fallen trees blocking major roads, causing widespread disruptions
• Danger to life from fast-flowing streams, excessive lightning, and flying debris
• Damage to structures from hail, wind, and flooding
• Major traffic disruptions, including road closures and flight cancellations
• Displacement of affected communities, with potential shortages of food and water.
