Alleged mastermind behind Brijmohan’s murder appears in court
The accused, believed to be the mastermind behind the murder, worked closely with the late ward 90 councillor, Sunil Brijmohan.
VIKASH Brian Sewnath (46), appeared in the Durban Regional Court on November 27, accused of orchestrating and financing the murder of former ward 90 councillor, Sunil Brijmohan.
Sewnath, who had worked closely with Brijmohan, was implicated by the two men convicted of the killing.

In 2023, Al-Barakh Jaleel van Rooyen and Santure Kirwin Mkhize were sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder which took place on October 21, 2022, at Cato Crescent, Amanzimtoti. Following their sentencing, the two agreed to testify for the state.
Two additional individuals, Vernon Chetty and Sibusiso Ngcobo, are also accused of being involved in the planning of the crime. Meanwhile, e-hailing driver Farah Moosa allegedly transported Van Rooyen and Mkhize to and from the scene.

During court proceedings, Van Rooyen testified that Chetty approached him and Mkhize in August 2022, promising them R500 000 to rob Brijmohan. However, on the day of the incident, the plan reportedly changed to murder. Mkhize is said to have carried out the shooting, using a 9mm pistol to shoot Brijmohan twice in the head.
Later that day, Van Rooyen claimed they were initially unable to collect their payment as Sewnath was occupied with Brijmohan’s funeral arrangements. That afternoon, Van Rooyen and Mkhize allegedly met with Sewnath, Ngcobo, and Chetty in Jacobs, where they were given R20 000 to split. Additional payments of R4 500 each were made nearly two months later, on December 16.
Raymond Sakloo, a friend and political colleague of Brijmohan, called for long sentences for those involved.
“Rest in peace, my brother, friend, and comrade. Your killers will rot in jail for a long time, and justice will be served,” Sakloo said in a public statement.
The trial is ongoing.
