According to ALS Paramedics who responded to the near drowning, the young woman was being attended to by lifeguards when they arrived on the scene. It is believed that she was swimming when she encountered difficulties.

According to ward councillor Andre Beetge, the woman and her friend were swimming near the tidal pool when the undercurrent pulled them out to sea.

“The area is not marked as a swimming beach and there are no lifeguards on duty. They still responded swiftly, however, and managed to save both women. One woman was fine while her friend was taken to hospital. It is very important to only swim at beaches that are marked for swimming and where the lifeguards are,” Beetge said.

“ALS Paramedics took over the care of the patient and stabilised her on the scene before transporting her to a nearby hospital for further care,” the statement read.

All necessary authorities were in attendance on the scene.
