Spaza shop registration deadline extended
The Kingsburgh Sizakala Centre in Winklespruit is one of the places to collect forms for the registration of spaza shops.

THE registration deadline for unregistered spaza shops has been extended to February 28, providing business owners additional time to comply.

In Doonside, Umgababa, and Isipingo, several shops have previously been either fined or shut down because of illegal trading.
After several incidents of food poisoning from food bought at unregistered businesses, President Cyril Ramaphosa directed that all spaza shops and other food handling facilities be registered within the municipalities in which they operate as a way to ensure that the sector is properly regulated and adheres to health regulations.
The previous registration window which the president had announced lapsed on December 17.
Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) minister Velenkosi Hlabisa said the government still needs to do more work to ensure the sector is properly regulated and adheres to health regulations.
“In considering whether or not to extend the registration deadline, the government considers its commitment to supporting small businesses, prioritising health and safety, ensuring inclusiveness and fairness, and maintaining its integrity,” said Hlabisa.

He added that the municipal processes of adopting and adapting the by-laws as gazetted by the Cogta are highly regulated and need a lot of consultation to complete.
“Before the revised deadline, the government in all its spheres will continue to implement the action plan to address the crisis of food-borne illnesses and the illicit trade of goods across the country,” concluded Hlabisa.
Those who have registered their businesses and have duly received their acknowledgement of registration still need to undertake a further process to obtain their trading licences. For this process, eThekwini Municipality’s Environmental Health Department’s practitioners and other regulatory authorities will still inspect registered food-related trading businesses to ensure that they are eligible to trade.
