A whopping 137 refuse bags were collected by the community members, filled to the brim with contaminated plastic products, endless amounts of shoes, slops, medicine and glass bottles, and nappies.
The endeavour, supported by Sapphire Coast Tourism and the eThekwini Municipality Parks, Beach Cleansing Unit District 5, was organised prior to the heavy rainfall and flooding, which only exacerbated the influx of waste along the shorelines of the South Coast.
We were overwhelmed by the support of the young eco warriors and supporters that gave their everything to pick up plastic waste along the shores of the Amanzimtoti Country Club, Umbogintwini Beach.
Romy Wenzel, of the Clean Surf Project, said, “You can all be very proud of yourself, our youth leading by example. The damage is extensive due to continuous rainfalls with more and more litter entering our waterways due to incorrect waste disposal. Any support from the community, schools and / or businesses will be more than welcome to continue the clean sweeps along the Upper KZN South Coast.”
She added that another community clean-up is provisionally scheduled for March 15, however, the location and time is to be confirmed. For further details, contact 083 733 6468, 082 802 3353 or email cleansurfproject@gmail.com.
