HUNDREDS of thousands of drivers have been in limbo since February after the only driving licence card printing machine in the country went out of order. In those four months it has led to a backlog of nearly 750 000, with just over 115 000 KZN drivers either driving unlicensed, using temporary licences or waiting to get back on the road.

National spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Collen Msibi, said, “The printing machine has been fixed and operations have been resumed. Working hours for staff members at the Driving Licence Card Agency, an entity of the Department, will be extended to ensure the reduction of the backlog.”
Msibi explained that updates on the progress of the backlog reduction will be issued once significant strides have been made, however, he noted that backlog reduction is also dependent on the number of orders for driving licence cards being received on a daily basis.
