Pics: Knitting and crocheting winter warmth for Khanya Hospice

Well over 50 community members crocheted and knitted together for wooly winter warmth for the patients of Khanya Hospice.

VIBRANT colours, conversation and beautiful crocheted and knitted blankets were the order of the day at the Amanzimtoti Methodist Church when members of the community came together for Community Hospice Outreach’s annual knit-a-thon/crochet-a-thon on May 24.

It was a day of fun, laughter, lots of tea and snacks as attendees knitted and crocheted blankets and other woolly winter essentials for patients of Khanya Hospice.

The event organiser, Aleta Evert, said that the event is marked on the calendar from January, and many skilled and amateur wool whisperers knit or crochet blankets to be donated from the beginning of the year.

Evert started the heart-warming outreach initiative after losing her father to cancer. “It was horrific and a steep learning curve to coping with the loss. I became involved with community work and it boomeranged into initiatives such as this one,” she said.

On behalf of the Khanya Hospice team, Elaine Trotter said, “This community outreach is something we hold once a year at the Amanzimtoti Methodist Church. Men and women come along from all denominations and areas for a day of fellowship, knitting and crocheting fun, all for the benefit of our hospice patients as the cold weather starts to set in. An incredible 40 blankets were donated with many more expected when the squares are sown together. In addition, some lovely beanies, scarves and bed socks were donated, and R5000 was raised and donated to Hospice.”
