Lifesaving clubs to welcome new nippers on open day

Two longstanding lifesaving clubs in Amanzimtoti will host their open days at the end of the month to bring in new nippers.

AMANZIMTOTI’S lifesaving clubs play an integral part in the community’s coastal life, from keeping beachgoers safe to competing in lifesaving competitions in KZN and across the country.

Dating back to 1927, the club has a strong presence in the community. Warnadoone Lifesaving Club will host its annual nippers open day on August 31 from 08:30 to 10:00. The public are encouraged to join, meet the coaches and see what lifesaving is all about.

Gavin Fristenberg, club chairman and head nippers coach, expressed excitement in anticipation of the new nippers training season.

“Lifesaving is an invaluable way to teach the skills needed to navigate the ocean and save lives, whilst keeping fit and forming lifelong friendships. Competitive teams are encouraged to take part in various events as a way of engaging with, and competing against, like-minded athletes from across the province and country,” said Fristenberg.

The club caters to all age groups, including nippers from age seven, through to masters 30 and above.

Be sure to bring along swimming costumes, towels, sunscreen, water, a copy of your ID, and loads of energy. For more information, contact Gavin Fristenberg on 082 725 4649 or email wdnippers@gmail.com.

Gary Barber, chairperson of the club which was founded in 1927, said the club prides itself in involving the whole family, and is committed in getting each member qualified, allowing them to excel in whichever aspect of lifesaving they choose.

The club will host its open day on August 31, at 11:00, and invites the community to attend and see firsthand what lifesaving entails.

“The day will consist of some fun beach events, including beach volleyball and an obstacle course, as well as the opportunity to view the club’s facilities. Our members look forward to welcoming the Amanzimtoti community,” said Barber.

Membership starts with nippers from seven years old, followed by juniors from 14 and seniors from 18.
