Winklespruit lifesavers search for future lifeguards to train

Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club is on the lookout for wannabe lifesavers to train as the club keeps growing.

THE WINKLESPRUIT Surf Lifesaving Club hopes to steer itself back to its former glory after being among the worst affected by the sweeping impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, intermittent beach closures due to E.coli contamination in the beaches, and lifesavers jumping ship to other clubs.

Club chairman Neville Hazell said, “When Winklespruit beach reopened last year, we started recruiting a new intake of nippers. We are pushing for another recruiting drive and hope for the club to rise from strength to strength.”

Club captain Stefan Becker said there are currently seven lifeguard trainees. He added that the club’s athletes are looking for small friendly competitions in order to practise for the provincial championships slated for early next year.

“As captain, I am trying to grow our members as capable lifesavers and rebuild the club to restore its potential. Lifesaving and its associated sporting events have an astoundingly positive impact on our youth, all the while allowing them to help serve their community,” said Becker.

Make a splash with the club and contact Stefan Becker on 061 917 8571 for more information on how to join.

What awaits nippers:

  • Training to become a lifeguard.
  • Representing Winklespruit in competitions.
  • Building fitness, courage and teamwork.
  • Making new friends and learning essential lifesaving skills.
