Professionals among 31 arrested in Amanzimtoti RTI crackdown

Those arrested include individuals from a wide range of professions, highlighting that no one is above the law.

A total of 31 motorists, including a pest controller, attorney, police officer and school principal, were arrested during a major Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) operation in Amanzimtoti on Wednesday night (December 31).

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has praised the RTI team stationed in Winklespruit for their firm and decisive action, saying their swift intervention prevented potential loss of life.

Those arrested include individuals from a wide range of professions, highlighting that no one is above the law. Among those detained were a pest controller with more than 10 years’ experience, an attorney, a police officer, a pharmacist, a school principal, a teacher, a mechanic, a forklift driver, a miner, a scrap dealer, a pensioner and a security guard.

Duma said the situation could have ended in tragedy had the RTI team not acted promptly.

“Many people could have died last night and into this morning, but RTI moved in swiftly and prevented carnage,” he said.

The operation forms part of ongoing law-enforcement efforts aimed at removing dangerous drivers from the roads and ensuring safer travel for all road users.
