Lower Illovo community to march against City’s homeless shelter plans

The Lower Illovo and surrounding community will be marching against the eThekwini Municipality's plan to set up the Sakhithemba Homeless Shelter.

NEARLY a year after the community first rallied together in opposition to eThekwini Municipality’s Sakhithemba Homeless Shelter project in Lower Illovo, residents will once again stand up and march in unison on March 20.

The march is convened by the Progressive Civics Congress (PCC). It will commence at the same location where last year’s march began, at the open space opposite 7-Eleven Engen Garage, along the R603, and participants will proceed along the R603 down to Illovo Primary School.

In June last year, the Lower Illovo and surrounding community’s march saw around 500 participants.

Provincial chairperson of the PCC, Bonginkosi Dlamini, said the march serves to express deep concerns and objection to the Sakhithemba Homeless Shelter.

“The shelter location, adjacent to a school and amidst business premises, poses a significant risk to our children’s safety, well-being, and education. We understand the importance of supporting vulnerable individuals, but we cannot compromise on the safety and future of our children and the investors. As a community, we demand that the eThekwini Municipality reconsider this decision and prioritise our concerns. Join us as we stand together to protect our neighbourhood, schools, and community,” said Dlamini.
