Damage to the crèche was so bad that it had to close doors and move to one of the teachers’ homes so that its children were cared for and continued to be educated.

President of the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti, Chris Stange, said that the club have been custodians of the crèche for over a decade, providing food parcels, baby items, stationery and other much-needed support.

“We managed to get M Projects on board, who specialise in prefabricated buildings. The classroom’s roof structure and the main steel roof was damaged, making it an unsafe environment. The crèche was recently given a facelift, with two new fabricated classrooms and a new overhead steel roof to protect the classrooms from rain,” said Stange.

Stange extended thanks to the project’s sponsor for providing a safe space for the crèche’s children to continue their education.

How to help

The Lions club appeals to the community for donations of the following items, which the crèche requires:

  • Prams
  • Cots
  • Toiletries, hygiene products and other items for babies
  • Kitchen cupboards
  • A plasma screen television
