New Year arrests in Athlone Park

Community Police Sub-Forum patrollers apprehended two suspects on Kingsway Road in the early hours of the morning.

TWO men were arrested after they were found in possession of stolen copper cables and housebreaking implements in Athlone Park in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

A few Athlone Park Community Police Sub-Forum (APCPSF) members had been patrolling the area when the two men were spotted. In a statement, the APCPSF said there had been a spike in the incidents of copper thefts at residences in the area, which prompted its members to take action.

“A special operation was planned to catch the copper thieves responsible for disrupting the festive spirit. Instead of partying until the early hours of the morning, some of our patrollers chose to spend the first few hours of 2024 on patrol in the rain, and their sacrifice paid off,” said the APCPSF.

Just after 03:00, the patrollers apprehended two suspects on Kingsway Road carrying house-breaking tools and a large bag full of residential electrical cables.

“Thanks also to Blue Security – Durban, Fidelity ADT, ET Rapid Response and CCPO for assisting. Our CPF patrollers have made huge sacrifices throughout the last year to help make Athlone Park safer for all residents. If you are an Athlone Park resident, please consider doing your part to help make Athlone Park safer this year by joining the patrol team. All we ask for is to commit one hour of your time each week,” they said.
