Metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said metro police officers were escorting a Fidelity pension payout vehicle from the Umbumbulu rural area when they spotted a white VW Polo without registration plates.

“Our officers and a team of officers from the Umbumbulu Police Station stopped the vehicle to investigate. As the vehicle was stopped, one male passenger alighted and fled into the bushes. Our members gave chase, and he was caught and arrested after a gun was found on him. While the driver was being searched, a woman who was sitting in the backseat claimed she had been taken from her residence in Umgababa and the men had robbed her,” said Zungu.

All suspects and the woman were taken to the Amanzimtoti Police Station where the driver and his accomplice were detained.

“The other two suspects are at large, and they have transferred R36 000 from the woman’s bank account. She was being robbed of her Road Accident Fund payout,” he said.

The suspects were processed for robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition. They will appear in court soon.
