According to an eThekwini Municipality statement in June, the quantity of water being used by the city exceeds the licensed quantity, resulting in uMgeni-uThukela Water being instructed to reduce supply by 8.4%.

“This inadvertently means the eThekwini Municipality would also have to reduce its consumption to ensure continued water availability during periods of low rainfall. The average water consumption in eThekwini is very high. Presently it stands around 270 and 298 litres per capita (person) per day (I/c/d) compared to the international average of 1731/c/d. Therefore, water curtailment is critical in ensuring long-term water security,” said the statement.

Despite several attempts being made to reduce consumption, little savings have been realised. The City has therefore decided to install individual flow restrictors to all residents that are supplied from the uMgeni system catchment.
