Amanzimtoti resident helps initiate street clean-up

He said it is all just a matter of people taking responsibility, and taking their black bags to dump sites which are free to make use of.

COMMUNITY member, Mlungisi Mthembu, initiated a clean-up along an open section of land just off Longacres Drive that is being used as an illegal dumping ground.

Mthembu, who lives in Illovo and who works for eThekwini Municipality’s parks department, has initiated the third clean-up in his personal capacity by coordinating a gathering of community members and friends to join in and neaten the section of land that they have to walk past each day.

“The strip of land just off Longacres Drive into Santo Alberto, has been used as an illegal dumping zone for years. The rubbish is in black bags, too big to carry, so they must have been brought here by vehicle, despite the municipal dumps being less than 2km away,” said Mthembu.

He managed to organise gloves, masks and plastic bags from the parks department, and arranged with Durban Solid Waste (DSW) to bring one of their trucks to pick up the many bags of collected litter.

Mthembu, his team who helped mobilise the clean-up and members of the community were also met with support from local businesses who supplied the 40 plus people with refreshments for all their efforts.

He cares about the animals, environment and people who are exposed to the litter on a daily basis, which is what motivates him to get the area cleaned-up.

He is looking to approach the agricultural department, in an attempt to get them to uplift the area by planting various plants/ flowers, in hopes that it might deter people from dumping their litter there.
