Toti SPCA raises awareness for International Dog Day
The day is about bringing awareness to the condition of animals, encouraging adoption as well as celebrating man’s best friend.
TODAY, August 26, is International Dog Day, and the Amanzimtoti SPCA hopes to keep fighting the good fight for those who cannot speak for themselves.
“We all know we don’t need an excuse to celebrate man’s best friend, but it’s always a nice reminder to shower our furry friends with a bit of extra love,” said Michelle Hannan of Amanzimtoti SPCA.

She said that there are many ways to spoil your dog, such as taking them for a walk, playing with them or even buying some delicious treats for them at the Amanzimtoti SPCA reception.
Hannan said dogs have not always had it easy, and as humans have learnt over the centuries, these animals are sentient beings. “There are, unfortunately, many animals still suffering out there. If you do see any animal cruelty in your area, contact us directly on 031 904 2424, and you will remain anonymous,” she said.

Hannan said dogs started off as a tool for humans to hunt, protect themselves and their property or livestock and for transport, to name a few things. “Since then, humans have evolved, and they have realised not only the emotional benefits but the health benefits of having a dog.
“Not only do they provide companionship to us at home, but also for those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), stress, anxiety and depression. Dogs are also used in many environments, including hospitals, retirement homes, schools, libraries, hospices or disaster areas,” she said.
She added that dogs can help you stay active, lower blood pressure levels naturally, and fight loneliness, while service dogs can save lives and help people live more independently.
“Having a dog can help you in so many ways. We agree that rescue dogs make the best pets, so please adopt and don’t shop.
“If for some reason you can no longer look after your pet, please bring them through to us, and we will do our best to rehome your animal. Please do not give away unsterilised animals as this adds to the overpopulation,” said Hannan.
