Edu-Paw hosts graduation ceremony

The founder said the children enjoyed learning something new each week about proper canine care.

GRADUATION day for Edu-Paw’s Class 10, to celebrate the culmination of their eight-week canine care programme, was recently hosted at the Amanzimtoti SPCA.

It was a proud moment for Edu-Paw volunteers, Snethemba Mnyandu and Precious Shezi, as they handed out certificates to the children of Class 10, who completed the programme.

“Each child also received a beautiful laminated poster of the ‘Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare’ from Hero in my Hood story activity books,” said the organisation’s founder, Cathy Keegan.

The five freedoms are: freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury or disease; freedom to express normal behaviour, and freedom from fear and distress.

After the ceremony, the children got to enjoy a small party with hotdogs, cake, juice and a box of sweet treats. Keegan said they do their best to change young minds about animal welfare while instilling a love for animals through education and example.

“We encourage the children to step out and be animal-welfare ambassadors in their communities, and to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves,” she said.

Keegan added that the children enjoyed learning something new each week about proper canine care, and they could see as the weeks progressed, they were doing their best to implement what they had learnt.

“Their favourite part of the entire programme was the dog training and agility classes presented by Robyn Dunbar and Irene Moussouris from the Umbogintwini Dog Training Club,” she said.

Edu-Paw thanked every single person who supported, donated, assisted or helped them in any way.
In November, Edu-Paw sets time aside to meet with their volunteers to discuss, improve and restructure the programme where necessary.

They will commence Class 11 in January next year.
