Brijmohan was shot and killed in Amanzimtoti on his property in October 2022. A surveillance video of the incident showed two men walking towards Brijmohan. As he turned and walked to meet them, he was shot at point-blank range in the face and body, dying at the scene.
The suspects were arrested in January and made their first court appearance on the 17th of the same month. The case was postponed to February 1, and at the time, KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisoon-Kara said only two out of the four were to apply for bail after the other two opted not to. After their February 1st appearance, the case was postponed to February 10.
The community of Isipingo, where Brijmohan was from, have mobilised and attended court every time the accused were to appear, to protest and implore the court not to grant bail. Community activist and Brijmohan’s close friend, Raymond Sakloo, released a statement saying the community is going to continue demanding that bail be denied.
“We hope that the NPA and the police make sure that the person who planned the murder and paid the perpetrators of this crime be charged. Our team will not be happy with the NPA if they use him or her as a state witness in the case against the other two murderers of Sunil. We will be consulting with our legal team to officially make representation to the court on behalf of the Justice for Sunil Brijmohan team,” said Sakloo.
