The provincial Department of Education’s spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi, said Adams College was chosen because the school has produced great leaders in all fields since it was established in 1853. Mahlambi also said the book club was launched to encourage the culture of reading among young people.

“Following this launch, regional book clubs will be launched in all 12 districts of KZN. In addition to fostering the culture of reading, these will provide a platform for discussing critical issues affecting literature in society. President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his 2019 State of the Nation Address, highlighted the importance of fostering the culture of reading through the nation,” said Mahlambi.

The first book selected for the Provincial Book Club is In the Midst of it All, written by Thabile Shange.
MEC Frazer said her vision is to see these book clubs as inclusive spaces that attract and welcome readers of different ages and backgrounds.

“It is my heartfelt request that while adults read their club-selected books at home, they invite the children in their households to join them in reading age-appropriate materials,” said Frazer.

The MEC encouraged all stakeholders and community members to join the book clubs in their respective districts.
