Isipingo great-great-grandfather celebrates 100th birthday
Five generations of the Ramadus came together to celebrate Lutchmudu's 100th birthday.
LUTCHMUDU Ramadu’s 100th birthday bash at Umbogavango Nature Reserve, on March 2, celebrated his journey from humble beginnings to family legacy.
Lutchmudu’s journey to a century paints a picture of a life filled with perseverance. His son, Cuffie, said he was raised in poverty on a sugar cane field in Illovo, where he learned the value of hard work from a young age.

“He started working in the fields at just 12 years old. Later, he transitioned to work in the sugar mill where he eventually retired,” he said.
He married his wife at the age of 20, and together, they shared 60 years of marriage before her passing. They had nine children, one of whom has since passed.
Lutchmudu’s dedication to his family and community is evident in the values he instilled in his children: honesty, hard work and treating others with love and respect.
“This is what he taught us growing up, and this is what I teach my two boys and grandchildren,” said Cuffie.
His love for sports, particularly soccer and boxing, speaks to his vibrant spirit and zest for life.
“He has always maintained a healthy lifestyle, which undoubtedly contributed to his long life,” said his son, who added that it is a privilege to still have him in their lives.
At the family gathering, with his actual birthday being the following day, there were five generations. Cuffie said there are about 40 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren.
