Metro police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, said after the information was received, police teams proceeded to the location and uncovered tons of cobalt and soda ash packed in bags.
“These were allegedly stolen from a company near Mega City in Umlazi. Further investigation revealed two men offloading raw cobalt powder from a vehicle. Both suspects were apprehended and found to be part of a syndicate responsible for stealing the soda ash and cobalt. The stolen materials have not yet been returned to the rightful owners because of logistical delays,” said Zungu.
Both soda ash and cobalt are key raw materials in the production of washing powder and lithium batteries, respectively. Zungu said they are believed to have been on the verge of being exported to China.
The suspects were arrested and their vehicle was seized for transporting the goods. Both were charged and detained at Isipingo Police Station.
