Another substation catches fire in Isipingo

Residents in Isipingo have experienced multiple power outages due to fires at substations. This is the second such incident.

AN ELECTRICITY substation at Isipingo Hills’ James Avenue suffered fire damage on January 8, leading to a loss of power supply in commercial and residential areas.

Ward 90 councillor, Shad Nowbuth, said several hundred customers were affected. The cause of the fire has not been established.

“Staff is attending to the matter and the Electricity Department has been urged to urgently restore power to all affected areas. Customers should note that a replacement unit has to be installed which may result in a delay in restoring power. In addition, weather conditions may be a further challenge to the teams,” said Nowbuth.

This was the second substation in Isipingo to catch fire in three months. In November 2024, the Willow Creek substation had to be replaced.

Apart from the burnt substation in James Avenue, two separate cable faults occurred on January 8, contributing to power outages affecting the Isipingo CBD.

“Once the James Avenue Substation is restored, most of the area will be back with power,” said Nowbuth.
