Starting the year with a ‘clean sweep’

The Clean Surf Project team got 2025 underway with a clean-up along the Amanzimtoti river mouth, picking up 35 bags of litter.

LOCAL non-profit organisation, Clean Surf Project (CSP), started the year off on a good note, conducting clean-up campaigns at the Amanzimtoti river mouth and surrounding beach areas such as Chain Rocks.

According to Romy Wenzel of the CSP, recent rainfalls have caused rivers to breach, resulting in heaps of unnatural waste being flushed into the ocean and scattered along the shore.

The dedicated team, made up of dynamic duo, Vusi Michael Zondi and Siyabonga Sibusiso Cele, managed to collect 35 bags of litter on January 14, and plan to continue doing clean sweeps during the week.

Siyabonga Sibusiso Cele, of the Clean Surf Project, tirelessly cleaned the beach and plans to continue for the rest of the week.

Clean Surf Project puts focus on remote beach areas that are located close to rivers as most waste material enters our waterways and stormwater drains due to incorrect waste disposal. We wish to express our gratitude to each and everyone that supported us during the course of last year and hope to see you again in 2025. A special thank you goes out to eThekwini Municipality, District 5 Parks Beach Cleansing Unit, Beach Management, as well as Sapphire Coast Tourism, for always assisting when the need arises even though available resources may be limited from time to time,” said Wenzel.

The rainfall during the past week has resulted in rivers breaching and waste spilling along the beach.

CSP plans to continue providing educational presentations to highlight the negative impact of plastic materials in the environment, particularly in the marine ecosystem.
