Ons Winkel celebrates fifth birthday

Despite facing many challenges of launching a business on the brink of a global pandemic, Ons Winkel persevered with the support of the community.

ONS Winkel, the heartbeat of giving in Doonside, just turned five and it did so in style. Solidariteit Helpende Hand’s beloved charity shop marked the milestone with gratitude, celebrating the generous supporters and donors who have kept its mission alive over the years.

The shop’s owner, Karen Duyvestyn, said while the shop has had its ups and downs just like any other business, the support from the community kept the shop going. The shop’s opening on February 24, 2020, coincided with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa but it managed to soldier on.

“The times are difficult and most people don’t have as much disposable income as they used to but we continue to grow from strength to strength. We look forward to continuing serving the community,” said Duyvestyn.

The day was celebrated with cupcakes for shoppers and the dedicated staff.

Part of the proceeds raised through sales go towards Solidariteit Helpende Hand’s Study Fund, which provides interest-free study loans to needy students who qualify to study further but do not have the financial means to do so. The proceeds are also used for several other projects, such as children and senior organisations that are aimed at alleviating, ending, and preventing poverty.

The shop is situated at 25 Main Road and is open six days a week from 08:30 to 16:30 on weekdays and 08:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays. Donations can be dropped at the shop or Duyvestyn can be contacted on 084 798 6394 for more information.
