[In pics] Fashion design students strut their stuff in self-made outfits

Seed of Hope's fashion design students modelled their creations for the community in a fashion show held at the organisation's training room.

STUDENTS of Seed of Hope’s fashion design classes put their sewing machines to work before stepping onto the runway themselves to show off their dazzling outfits to the community in a fashion show held at the organisation’s training room on March 28.

With spirits nearly dampened by rains on the day, the students, who not only made the gorgeous outfits on display but also put the show on themselves, soldiered on. In what was a brightly coloured, elegant showcase of one smart casual outfit and one formal outfit each, the students received raucous applause with each pose struck  and each smile flashed.

Heather Lieberman, chairperson of Seed of Hope, said, “Basic sewing class students at Seed of Hope learn how to use a sewing machine and over-locker, make button holes as well as how to sew straight stitches. They put their newly developed skills to work making pillow covers, aprons, cushion covers with zippers, and curtains. Fashion design students learn to make patterns and create two outfits, which they modelled at the show. In the process, they discover their capabilities, their self esteem rises and leadership skills develop. Completing and showing off their creations builds their confidence while making for an incredibly fun experience. Many of the students are able to use their skills to earn an income for themselves and their families.”
