Selfless volunteers assist with over 200 community distress calls

Toti Community Assist volunteers' first aid supplies are waning and the organisation is in need of donations to keep assisting the community.

IN THE first two weeks of April alone, non-profit organisation, Toti Community Assist (TCA), has assisted at over 13 accidents, provided first aid at nearly eight medical emergencies and pointed response units to three crimes. On April 12, its members’ resolve was tested as they rescued a woman suspected to have suffered a miscarriage in the Amanzimtoti CBD.

Dalene Heath, of TCA, said, “A TCA volunteer arrived on the scene to find to woman shivering, laying down. After assessing her condition, it was found that she lost a lot of blood and was severely dehydrated. We followed the walking route she took and found her clothing buried and full of blood. State ambulances took her to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital where she is currently receiving the further care she requires.

During the call-out, TCA volunteers ran out of disposable gloves. Heath added, “TCA is made up solely of volunteers and each member pays for their own fuel, data and first aid supplies. Everything we do is to assist our community.”

If anyone has any disposable gloves, masks, and sanitiser to donate, send a WhatsApp message to 078 215 4797 to arrange a collection.

What Toti Community Assist does:

When accidents are reported, the organisation assists until paramedics arrive and dispatches towing companies. In addition, volunteers keep the community groups updated on anything that could affect the flow of traffic.

TCA is a NPO and relies on donations and assistance from the public to continue assisting the community. To date this year, they have attended to over 150 accidents, nearly 50 medical emergencies and responded to 25 crime reports from the community group chat on WhatsApp alone. Heath said the organisation also offers trauma counseling to the community.
